May 21: A Crabby Morning
In this photo Fred and Nelson bring spawning cages to Tashmoo.
In this photo a net full of spider crabs, gathered from the shallows.
In this photo, a spider crab attacks a quahog.
On a clear, warm, calm Monday, Tisbury assistant shellfish constables Fred Benson and Nelson Sigelman took advantage of the good weather to transport scallop cages to Tashmoo.
Later that morning, they checked crab traps in Lagoon Pond.
The traps were relatively empty but spider crabs were everywhere in the shallows. Spider crabs were everywhere. Taking advantage of the situation, Fred and Nelson began scooping up crabs in crab nets. The men filled a trash barrel in no time.
