The Shellfish Department has changed up the quahog nursery rafts. We are now using Polyform buoys to hold up the floating sand-filled nursery rafts. Previously we used blue foam dock floats. These old blue styrofoam floats were sandwiched between two pieces of plywood, which were large, cumbersome, and require more maintenance: scraping, retying, and painting.

With the help of Shellfish Assistant Nelson Sigelman, we researched different options for the rafts ones that will allow more light in than dock floats and will also be less maintenance and safer for the environment (not made from styrofoam).  The polyform buoys are it. We attach 4 to a raft. They can be seen across from the Lagoon boat ramp looking towards Hines Point.  Each raft can accommodate up to 100,000 quahog seed.
