June 17: Busy Days on the Water

What’s Going on in the Tisbury Shellfish Department

June 15, 16 &17: Busy Days on the Water

There is lots of preparation before the summer season begins. Earlier in the week, we began moving quahog grow rafts from the work area behind the DPW yard to the Lagoon Pond launch ramp parking lot. The rafts were later towed out and anchored in place. These rafts will be filled with sand and used to grow quahog seed provided by the shellfish hatchery. Later in the season, the juvenile quahogs will be distributed in town waters where they will grow to harvestable size.blocks

Assistant shellfish constable Nelson Sigelman, working with assistant constable Fred Benson at the helm, pushes a cinder block anchor over the side of the shellfish skiff in order to anchor a pair of quahog grow rafts.

On Saturday, June 16, the shellfish department hosted a family shellfish day open to the public. Young and old learned the finer points of raking up quahogs.

Volunteers from the Shellfish Advisory Committee and others assisted those new to shellfishing and youngsters were able to see a variety of creatures contained in a small wading pool. It was a fun day for all.

The day was a great success as clammer spread out across the Lagoon in an area marked off for recreational clamming.

Sunday, Father's Day, was a picture perfect day for being outdoors. Boaters and clammers took advantage of the weather. At Tashmoo, some visitors got a taste of the Island lifestyle.
