UPDATE  January 7, 2020

The Town received emergency procurement approval from the State for an expanded scope of work to construct, repair and replace drainage structures.  The contractor has delivered the necessary material to substantially complete this work.  We anticipate the contractor will commence work within the next week.  A meeting will be scheduled with residents to review the final construction schedule, scope of work and the anticipated date for the opening of the road.  Emergency access and response has been coordinated between the towns of Tisbury and West Tisbury Police and Fire when the road was first closed to thru
traffic.

UPDATE January 1, 2020

Lambert's Cove ( Smith Brook Culvert) will remain closed to all public traffic.  After unearthing the aging culvert the Town contracted Engineers for this project and has determined a full culvert replacement is necessary, this work will be done in tandem with the headwall replacement.  Road will remain closed until all work has been completed.  Updates to follow.  Kirk Metell, DPW Director

On Thursday, December 19, 2019, the contractor brought heavy equipment, pumps and material over from the mainland and began excavating the trench for drainage repairs late afternoon. The existing culvert is blocked and believed to have collapsed. The existing culvert is to a depth of approximately 10 feet below the road surface.  The groundwater level is just 4 to 6 feet below the road surface at this time and needs to drop further before the contractor can uncover the existing culvert and make repairs and replace the culvert and headwall at Smith Brook.  During the excavation another sink hole was found under the roadway.  Pumps are installed and reducing the groundwater level.  Eversource has responded with equipment and personnel to remove vegetation and to securing utility poles and power lines as this work proceeds forward. One travel lane will be opened later today to emergency vehicles only. The road closure will remain in place.  The drainage construction work is anticipated to be completed just after the new year.

Sincerely,
