Board of Selectmen Support Tisbury School Renovation & Addition Project

The Selectmen have a continuing commitment to address the ongoing operational and maintenance needs of the school, while concurrently working to complete the planning for the comprehensive renovation and addition to the Tisbury School Facility.   We will continue to work closely with the School Administration, School Committee and Tisbury School Building Committee on both these efforts.  Our shared common goal as a Town is to undertake and complete a comprehensive renovation and addition project of the Tisbury School Facility.  We want to express to you our sense of urgency to see this construction project move forward expeditiously through to completion.

Words cannot express how challenging the situation became in 2019 for students, parents and staff with the urgent need to perform emergency environmental remediation work on the school and to relocate students and faculty to the High School.  The resiliency in the face of adversity was demonstrated by all directly impacted.  The response from the residents to this emergency was overwhelming positive and without hesitation by approving emergency funds in the amount of 1.9 million dollars at the October 2019 Special Town Meeting.  We are gratified that this allowed for all the students and faculty to reoccupy the Tisbury School building at the end of December 2019.

It goes without saying, there will be ongoing work to accomplish at the Tisbury School.  We hope to foresee all potentialities.  However, we do anticipate that some unexpected turns may arise.  Town leaders and the citizens of Tisbury will mobilize as may be necessary or required.

In closing, the Selectmen’s goal is to support efforts to bring forward a comprehensive renovation and addition project before the voters for approval this calendar year.  The Tisbury School Project will address the long term physical and educational needs of the Tisbury School.  We are singularly committed to this goal.
