Gateway Study

Initial planning

This planning study sponsored by the Vision Council is looking the redesign of Union Street, the Steamship Authority lot and the visitors center to create a welcoming gateway to the island, the Vineyard Haven Harbor Cultural District and the Main Street commercial area.  Following discussion at the Vision forum a committee was formed to study how this entry corridor into the town might be improved. A plan has been completed that proposes reorganization of the Steamship Authority lot to improve sightlines and pedestrian movement towards Union Street, relocate and enlargement of the information center, make improvements to the VTA  bus stop, and improvements to create a more pleasant pedestrian corridor along Union street.

Current activity

The town recieved funding from embarkation fees to complete engineering drawings for construction and are currently in the process of hiring desingners to complete this work. Once the drawings are complete Complete Street's funds will be used for construction. Project implementation is planned for this winter and early spring. Check Vision Forum meeting schedule for future project presentations.
