TISBURY EXPLORES COMMUNITY GARDEN CONCEPT
Vineyard Haven – The Tisbury Board of Selectmen are pleased to announce the acceptance of letters of interest in a community garden. The Town of Tisbury has had the good fortune of having numerous plots of land left to the Town with various levels of restrictions placed on those parcels. One of the allowable uses for any of these type properties
Town Administrator John Bugbee stated, “I would encourage anyone who has an interest in growing and maintaining their own garden to write a letter of interest to the town. This is needed to accurately gauge the level of interest in such a program among the citizenry of Tisbury. Although we are still in the infant stages of this initiative, we are at the point where the level of interest will dictate whether this program goes to the next step or if it is project is shelved.”
Residents of Tisbury interested in maintaining a plot of land for the purpose of growing a garden are encouraged to submit a letter of interest to:
John Bugbee
Tisbury Town Administrator
Attn: Community Garden
P.O. Box 1239
Vineyard Haven, MA 02568
Letters of interest must be received by Tuesday September 23rd .
The concept has been successfully implemented in many municipalities and non-profit organizations. Selectmen Isreal was the first to raise the issue and stated, “I feel that this would be a perfect use for one of these parcels of land while at the same time providing a benefit to those who wish to grow their own garden. I hope that those who are interested will write a letter of interest so we can move this project to the next level.”
UPDATE 4/29/09
The Community Garden plans have been placed on hold due to budgetary constraints. The Board of Selectmen agreed that the timing was not conducive to moving forward with this project. However, the Board did make it clear that by no means had this project been eliminated. The Board will take this time to search for alternative funding sources and explore ways to take this project to the next level, please visit this page for further updates.
